Description
Another one of those stories we hear almost every day: Refugees are picked up at the Austrian border after a dramatic chase. And then nothing more is heard of them. The problem seems to be solved as usual: detention pending deportation. But this time everything is completely different: the story continues in Ghana, where everything is suddenly turned upside down. One dark night, Isaac, a 25-year-old black man, crosses the green border illegally into Austria. Isaac quickly becomes the star of a village club’s soccer team. And he also quickly finds a girl to be his girlfriend. By chance, the gendarmerie discover that Isaac’s British passport is forged. The authorities assume that Isaac is a Ghanaian citizen, which he vehemently denies. Nevertheless, a decision is made to deport him.
Two officers, Rösler and Samhaber, are to take Isaac to Accra by plane. But once there, everything suddenly goes wrong. Major Makebi, the head of the immigration authorities in Accra, is firmly convinced that Isaac’s home travel certificate is a forgery and refuses to allow Isaac to enter Ghana. Because the two officers have tried to deceive him, Makebi takes Rösler and Samhaber’s passports. The two are not allowed to leave Accra until the matter has been resolved.
But Rösler and Samhaber are not prepared for a stay, they thought they would fly back on the same plane. So they can’t find accommodation because they have hardly any money with them. They can’t get any at the bank either because they can’t produce a passport. What’s more, it’s the weekend and the Austrian consulate in Accra is closed until Monday.
Like refugees, Rösler and Samhaber have to spend the night in a wrecked car together with street children. They are already very hungry and freezing, as it is the rainy season in Accra. So the two officers try to steal some food at the market in the morning. They are immediately caught and taken to Accra police prison. Nobody believes this crazy story about the two officers. The police think they are British drug dealers who have been wanted for a long time. So Rösler and Samhaber remain in police custody. At least until the Austrian consulate in Accra reopens…
